Who Detective is

The Detective watches anime like a chess match against the screenwriter: his goal is to deduce the culprit, the twist or the hero's true identity before the screen shows it. Investigations, mysteries, courtroom dramas and puzzle plots fill his list nearly whole, and the phrase «I figured it out in episode two» is his signature (and, annoyingly for everyone else, usually true).

A genre class with strict admission: the algorithm requires detectives and mysteries to dominate the list systematically. The real Detective is betrayed by depth: beyond the obligatory Death Note and Monster he's seen the niche procedurals, the old Rampo adaptations and the things where the riddle outweighs the action so completely that there is no action at all.

Screenwriters must hate him: he's the only viewer for whom a twist isn't a surprise but an exam the plot can fail. But when the Detective gives a high score, the intrigue was honest: the clues were on the table, the answer didn't fall from the sky, and the game was played without cheating. In a genre where fooling the viewer is the profession, his score is a mark of quality.
